Filter inductors are series chokes used to smooth current, attenuate ripple and harmonics, and shape switching waveforms in rectifiers, inverters, drives and power-conditioning equipment.

Overview

Filter inductors are series chokes used to smooth current, attenuate ripple and harmonics, and shape switching waveforms in rectifiers, inverters, drives and power-conditioning equipment. Depending on where they sit they act as DC-link/DC smoothing chokes (filtering rectifier output and absorbing DC-bus ripple and spikes), as LCL/harmonic-filter inductors paired with capacitors to attenuate switching frequencies, or as ripple-smoothing chokes in DC supplies. By presenting a rising impedance to higher-frequency components, they reduce harmonic distortion fed back to the supply, lower capacitor and semiconductor stress, and improve overall waveform quality. ACE manufactures these as dry-type, naturally-cooled inductors wound on low-loss laminated cores to a specified inductance and current rating, in single- or three-phase form. Buyers choose ACE for filter chokes tuned to their converter topology and harmonic-mitigation target rather than a generic part.
